In 2003, The PANSS Institute was founded to establish gold-standard methods for training and certifying investigators using the Positive And Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), developed by my father Dr. Lewis Opler and co-authors Dr. Kay and Dr. Fiszbein over twenty-five years ago.

While training investigators to use the PANSS, it became apparent that there was a concerted need to improve on standard training practices on a range of diagnostic and symptom severity instruments, a need to break with the evident monotony of existing educational approaches, to improve on trainers’ limited understanding of the developmental history and psychometric properties of these scales, and to bring true expertise to bear on the intended applications and practical use of CNS measures in clinical and research settings.

To meet the commercial educational needs of clinical raters conducting research in depression, anxiety, psychosis, dementia, developmental disorders and other disease areas, we founded ProPhase LLC in 2007.
